How to Get Rid of Fungus Gnats in Hydroponics

Have you spotted small, black flies buzzing around your grom room?

Fungus gnats can be a very irritating pest affecting your hydroponics grow room all year round. And when you take into consideration that a single female fungus gnat can lay up to 1,000 eggs in her one-week long life span, it’s easy to see how this pest can easily become uncontrollable.

Identifying Fungus Gnats

It’s easy to miss this pest, even with a close inspection of the plants’ root zone. Adult fungus gnats tend to be more of an inconvenience - it’s the larvae you need to worry about.

Unlike spider mites and thrips, which attack the top growth, fungus gnat larvae can typically be found:

  • Sucking the sap from plant roots.

  • Infecting damaged roots with fungus disease.

  • Chewing root tissue, which leads to damage that interferes with water and nutrient uptake.

Fungus gnats carry spores that tend to infect the roots that they damage. You may notice your plants showing signs of several nutrient deficiencies due to the root systems being damaged.

How to Get Rid of Fungus Gnats

Fungus gnats are typically brought into the grow room from already-infected plants. They typically lay eggs on dead plant matter, moist areas like your plants’ root system, or algae. You can usually find them walking around the base of the plant and the grow medium.

Should you see gnats when you move the grow medium around at the plants’ base, then they’re on the plants’ root system. Unnoticed long-term infections usually translate into larvae moving around in the discoloured roots.

To prevent a fungus gnat infestation, it’s always best to prevent them from getting into your grow room. Make sure to enclose your grow room and place filters on vents to the outside. You also need to thoroughly check any plants you’re introducing to the grow room to ensure they don’t have any eggs or larvae.

To get rid of fungus gnats, you need to remove any dead plant matter or algae from your grow room and use a Bugicide to control this pest. Give your plants the best possible chance to recover with a magic solver that provides them with nutrients they sorely need.
